We got the Draft XL for our 17hh Belgian & it only just fits, which honestly is still a win because finding things big enough for these giant creatures is no easy feat.
That said, there are a few things worth noting.
The ears are around 2 inches too big, so they’re hilariously floppy. Not a dealbreaker, just funny.
The bigger issue is when his head is down eating, which is about 90% of the time when wearing a fly mask. It puts quite a bit of pressure on the poll & behind the ears. On our horse, that caused sweat patches & I could see it eventually rubbing if you weren’t keeping a close eye on it. Definitely an area to monitor with regular grooming so it doesn’t end up galling.
The chin strap also only has about 1 to 2 inches of Velcro overlap before it becomes too tight. So again, it does fit, but only just. Based on that, I’d be very surprised if this truly fit an 18 to 19hh purebred giant.
My biggest disappointment was the visibility on the sand-colored mesh. I bought this after seeing an ad for the black one where they showed how well the horse could see through it & this was nothing like that. In certain light, he can barely see through it at all. I would absolutely never leave this on in the dark (of course). My guess is the darker mesh may perform much better, but the lighter one definitely seems to affect visibility more than expected. Worth knowing, especially so you don’t accidentally sneak up on your horse.
Overall, I’m still happy to have found a product from a great business that feels well made & high quality. Shipping was great too. But I wanted to be honest about the fit & visibility issues we ran into, espesh when it comes to our big horse community.
For us, this lands at 3.5 stars. Good product, just with a few limitations that really matter on a big horse.
